David Hansen is an arts educator, playwright, husband, father, and avid runner.
He is Education Outreach Associate for Great Lakes Theater, and a member of the Cleveland Play House Playwrights’ Unit.
In the 1990s David founded the Tremont-based Guerrilla Theater Company, which specialized in late-night social satire. David was also the founding Artistic Director for Dobama’s Night Kitchen, creating experimental dramatic works for young adult audiences.
Since 2001, David has been a member of the Great Lakes Theater Education Department. As an actor-teacher and a supervisor of GLT’s acclaimed School Residency Program, David has collaborated with thousands of students across Northeast Ohio. He has also been a member of the educational theater department at Karamu House.
His solo performance on stillbirth I Hate This: A Play Without The Baby was named one of the 10 Best Plays of 2003 by The Plain Dealer, and received an award for Excellence in Solo Performance at the New York International Fringe Festival. Recent works include Rosalynde & The Falcon, Double Heart (The Courtship of Beatrice and Benedick) and Great Lakes Theater’s 2016 free outreach touring production, an adaptation of Agatha Christie’s The Secret Adversary which opens February 16, 2016.
As an actor and director, David has worked at the Cleveland Play House, Great Lakes Theater, Cleveland Public Theatre, Dobama Theatre and Beck Center.
A dedicated runner, David has (to-date) run three marathons, in NYC, Cleveland and this past year in the Twin Cities. He has kept the blog Daddy Runs Fast (daddyrunsfast.blogspot.com) for over ten years, chronicling the daily victories and defeats of a middle-aged, male, suburban runner.
David lives in Cleveland Heights with his wife, Toni K. Thayer. Their children attend the amazing Cleveland Heights public schools.
